LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The Walt Disney Co plans to close director Robert Zemeckis’ ImageMovers Digital facility in Northern California, laying off 450 workers there, or more than 5 percent of its movie studio division.

Disney will shut down IMD and lay off those workers as it wraps up production on “Mars Needs Moms,” an animated film that will hit theaters a year from now.

The plan to close IMD comes as Rich Ross, recently appointed chairman of Walt Disney Studios, shakes up the company’s movie division to focus on films that can be leveraged across other platforms, including toys and video games.

(PEOPLE.com) — After performing at Italy’s Sanremo music festival on February 16, Susan Boyle told an adoring audience, “Dreams have no expiry date. I’d like this to go on and on.”

But at what cost?

Two of her brothers are now voicing concerns for her well-being and speaking out about her ability to handle the pressure of global stardom.

“The traveling and the whole [fame] thing is exhausting. She still has her anxieties and her loneliness,” her brother Gerry told PEOPLE in its latest cover story.

Her other brother, John, is even more blunt: “She needs 24-hour care. She needs to be looked after.”

Changing of the guard: Derek took over as Chief of Surgery, while Richard was given a choice between entering treatment for alcoholism and surrendering his medical license. Derek wanted him to choose treatment, but Richard was much too angry at him to listen. It was Bailey who got Richard to admit that he simply feared not being able to drink. Bailey told him to “be the chief” she knows he is, and he eventually signed off on the treatment option.

Fox devoted eight days to the “American Idol” audition round, but there were only seven cities on this year’s cross-country vacation for host Ryan Seacrest and the judges. That gave the show an extra hour to fill, which made Wednesday a clip show that focused mainly on singers who did well enough to make it to Hollywood.

Sixty more minutes of heartwarming tales and nervous-sounding voices … who could ask for anything more?

NEW YORK – Grim-faced celebrities and musicians with mournful tunes set the tone for the all-star, international “Hope for Haiti Now” telethon, which featured two hours of desperate pleas for an even more-desperate nation. But it ended on a hopeful note, with a buoyant call for Haiti’s revival by native son, Wyclef Jean.

“Enough of this moping man, let’s rebuild Haiti, let’s show ‘em how we do it where we come from!” Jean shouted after singing the slow song “Rivers of Babylon,” with a Haitian flag around his neck.

“Austin City Limits” has long wanted to kick open its doors to hip-hop, but the reckless messages embraced by some rappers made the program’s producers hesitant.

But Saturday, for the first time ever, the long-running PBS music showcase will devote its entire hour-long episode to two of hip-hop’s most talented acts: Brooklyn’s Mos Def and Somalian rhymesmith K’NAAN.

“I wasn’t sure how they or any hip-hoppers would react,” Terry Lickona, the series’ executive producer, told me this week. “I was humbled that Mos and K’NAAN were so quick to accept.”

Lickona, who has been with the show for 32 of its 35 years, said he was impressed by both artists’ rich music and that they use “their music not just to express themselves, but to make a statement about the world.”

“American Idol” was all about the comedy Wednesday night.

Sure, there was talent found at the Atlanta auditions, but the highlight of the evening was someone who left the judges in stitches despite having no shot at the title.

A 62-year-old who goes by the name “General” Larry Platt sang an original composition titled “Pants on the Ground.” The lyrics – “Pants on the ground, pants on the ground. Looking like a fool with your pants on the ground” – had even guest judge Mary J. Blige wiping away tears of amusement.

Platt is well beyond the age limit for contestants, but I predict that “Pants on the Ground” will be the new “Tardy for the Party.” The video of his performance is already a hit on YouTube.

- Entertainer Jay Leno did the ol’ soft shoe as speculation swirled that NBC might cancel his show or move it back to the 11:35 p.m. ET time slot.

“The Jay Leno Show,” now airing at 10 p.m., has had lackluster ratings since its debut in September, hurting affiliates as the lead-in to the evening news. If NBC makes the move, it would create a domino effect for the network’s other late-night programming — “The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien” and “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.”

Thanks to astronomic word-of-mouth, inflated 3-D ticket prices, and consecutive holiday weekends that began on a Friday, “Avatar” continued its seemingly unstoppable climb to the Hallelujah Mountains of U.S. and global box office.

According to estimates from Hollywood.com Box Office, James Cameron’s sci-fi opus grossed $68.3 million over New Years weekend, a tiny 10 percent drop from Christmas weekend for a $352.1 million domestic total — easily the biggest third weekend in the U.S. ever (2002’s “Spider-Man” had held the record with $45 million).

Los Angeles, California (CNN) — Patrick Watson is a creature of the moment.

Once he performed in a Paris, France, back alley, holding what appeared to be a flea-market megaphone. Two of his bandmates joined with guitars and tambourine, a local accordion player added his accompaniment and, right then and there, the group put on a show.

Even that set-up was extravagant by the Canadian songwriter’s standards. At a Patrick Watson concert, no kitchen utensil is safe, no car parts are off limits, and nowhere is out of bounds.
