It’s getting down to the wire for “Smallville,” “Community” and a slew of other network series stuck in Nielsen purgatory — with just weeks left to go before final verdicts on their fates are handed down.

For shows “on the bubble,” these are the times that try showrunners’ souls. Every week of ratings data between now and May, when fall schedules are revealed, brings glimmers of hope or new evidence suggesting damnation is near.

“Being on the bubble is incredibly stressful,” says “Chuck” co-creator Josh Schwartz, whose NBC series rallied back from the brink after fans rallied behind it.

Los Angeles, California (CNN) — Family tragedy, bad timing and tough competition kept Angela Martin from moving past “American Idol’s” Hollywood Week in three separate seasons.

The 28-year-old mother of a special needs child learned Friday that, despite not making the top 24 again, two “Idol” judges will help get her singing career cranked up.

Ellen DeGeneres, who is in her first season as a judge, invited Martin onto her talk show to discuss her struggles and to sing. And, DeGeneres said, fellow judge Kara DioGuardi will pen a song for her.

PASADENA, Calif. – Conan O’Brien’s ratings are soaring as he nears a bitter exit from NBC’s “Tonight Show,” his ridicule of his network executives apparently resonating in a country filled with the unemployed.

His ratings Friday were 50 percent higher than they’ve been this season, and he beat CBS’ David Letterman, according to a preliminary Nielsen Co. estimate based on large markets. In the 18- to 49-year-old demographic that NBC relies on to set advertising prices, O’Brien even beat Jay Leno’s prime-time show.

(PEOPLE.com) — In the aftermath of the alleged ransacking of the Manhattan apartment they shared, Jon Gosselin and ex-girlfriend Hailey Glassman continue to fling accusations at each other — via their lawyers.

On Monday, Gosselin’s attorney Mark Jay Heller told RadarOnline.com, “Hailey Glassman is going to jail, it’s as simple as that.” Now Glassman’s camp — who called the incident a publicity stunt — is firing back.

“For an attorney to go out there and say someone’s going to jail when they’re not even arrested — that’s just irresponsible,” Glassman’ lawyer Stephanie Ovadia tells PEOPLE. “That is the most ludicrous, ridiculous, unnecessary statement I have ever in my life heard.”

(AP) Simon Cowell’s brother says the next season of “American Idol” will be the judge’s last.

Tony Cowell said in his weekly podcast, “The Cowell Factor,” that a statement was being prepared that would certify that the acerbic British judge was leaving the popular Fox signing competition at the end of 2010.

Simon Cowell will concentrate on bringing his popular U.K. talent show “The X Factor” to the U.S. next year, his brother said on the Saturday podcast, which has since been removed.

ROCKVILLE, Md. – A Maryland judge is ruling in the dispute between Jon Gosselin and the TLC network that the father must stop making media appearances that are at odds with his contract.

Montgomery County Circuit Judge Michael D. Mason ruled Thursday following a one-day hearing.

TLC Chief Operating Officer Edward Sabin testified that Gosselin made unauthorized appearances and endorsements. In particular, he mentioned a pool party that Gosselin hosted at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. Sabin says photos from the event were at odds with the wholesome image of the show, “Jon & Kate Plus 8.”

Retired reality TV dad Jon Gosselin hasn’t yet had his day in court, but his former friend Michael Lohan feels certain the father of eight will lose his legal battle with cable network TLC.

On Wednesday, Lohan gave a lengthy no-holds-barred deposition in the breach of contract suit TLC brought against the ex-“Jon & Kate Plus 8” star. Lawyers for TLC were thorough in their pursuit of evidence, according to Lohan.

“They asked questions regarding my involvement on a business level with Jon Gosselin; deals that were negotiated; transactions that did occur and basically my deal with (his manager) Michael Heller,” Lohan explained to Radar Online.
