(CNN) — Before she uttered the N-word, before her remarks on cheated-on wives, before the controversies over homosexuality and religion and morality, Laura Schlessinger was considered a breath of fresh air.

“Despite the fact that many consider Laura Schlessinger the dragon lady of talk radio, some of us can’t help but admire her,” noted a decidedly mixed 1999 consideration of her in Salon. “She is snippish, overbearing and often insulting — but anybody who has the temerity to call in to her program knows what they are going to get, especially if they plead ignorance or innocence.”

This can’t be a good sign.

Mel Gibson has been dropped by his talent agency, William Morris Endeavor Entertainment, putting him one step closer to full-on career apocalypto.

While no one official is coming right out and saying it, the reason has got to be his latest round of “you’ve got to be kidding” antics, including the nasty custody situation between him and Oksana Grigorieva; the domestic-violence investigation against him, whether it holds water or not; and now

This past season of “American Idol” is widely regarded as one of the show’s worst, and the corresponding Idol Live! tour might be the last nail in season nine’s coffin.

The tour, which features the final 10 contestants, has suffered poor ticket sales (example: at press time, Wednesday’s show at Jones Beach, right outside New York, featured front-row seats still available for just $13). Seven shows have been cancelled, and nine shows have been rescheduled.

There are a few ways to look at the jam-packed two-hour season finale of “Grey’s Anatomy.” It was a cleaning-out of a couple of characters that were going nowhere; it was a whirlwind tour through a bunch of long and drawn-out romantic story lines; and it gave several actors massive, Emmy-baiting showcases.

(CNN) — Kate Gosselin’s eight children are cleared to work on their mom’s newest reality TV show, “Kate Plus 8,” according to a spokesman for the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry.

“Each child is individually permitted, and they need to be renewed every six months,” said spokesman Troy Thompson.

Pennsylvania labor officials recently decided that while the Gosselins violated the state’s child labor law by not getting work permits for the kids for their original show — “Jon & Kate Plus 8″ — no charges would be filed as long as they had permits for future shows.

(The Frisky) — I know you are really, really upset — but can you stop crying for a second so we can talk about the fact that Katherine Heigl is finally leaving “Grey’s Anatomy?”

Long overdue, as far as I’m concerned. She has been annoying me since day one. How bad can the job really be? Hmmm, let’s see. You get paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to show up on set for 12 episodes — then you get half the year off. Yeah, I think I’d quit too.

It’s getting down to the wire for “Smallville,” “Community” and a slew of other network series stuck in Nielsen purgatory — with just weeks left to go before final verdicts on their fates are handed down.

For shows “on the bubble,” these are the times that try showrunners’ souls. Every week of ratings data between now and May, when fall schedules are revealed, brings glimmers of hope or new evidence suggesting damnation is near.

“Being on the bubble is incredibly stressful,” says “Chuck” co-creator Josh Schwartz, whose NBC series rallied back from the brink after fans rallied behind it.

Los Angeles, California (CNN) — Family tragedy, bad timing and tough competition kept Angela Martin from moving past “American Idol’s” Hollywood Week in three separate seasons.

The 28-year-old mother of a special needs child learned Friday that, despite not making the top 24 again, two “Idol” judges will help get her singing career cranked up.

Ellen DeGeneres, who is in her first season as a judge, invited Martin onto her talk show to discuss her struggles and to sing. And, DeGeneres said, fellow judge Kara DioGuardi will pen a song for her.
